How to Plan Your Kitchen Renovation

Start With Your Budget
Before you look at a single door or worktop, establish a realistic budget. A quality kitchen in the UK typically starts from around £8,000 supply and fitted for a standard installation — and can rise to £25,000+ for a fully bespoke, premium result. Be honest about what you can spend and factor in a 10–15% contingency for unexpected works.
Assess Your Layout
The layout of your kitchen will have the biggest impact on how it feels to use every day. The three most common layouts are:
- L-shape — ideal for medium rooms, creates an efficient work triangle
- U-shape — maximises storage in larger rooms
- Galley — works brilliantly in narrow spaces, keeping everything within easy reach
- Open-plan with island — the aspirational choice for large, family-focused spaces
If you're changing the layout significantly, factor in the cost of moving plumbing and electrics.
Choose Your Units and Worktops
Units come in a range of door styles, from shaker and handleless to in-frame and painted solid wood. The quality of the carcass (the box behind the door) matters as much as the door itself — look for solid construction and good-quality hinges and drawer runners.
Worktops are where you can make a real statement. Popular choices include:
- Quartz — durable, low-maintenance, and available in a huge range of colours
- Granite — natural stone with unique character, very hardwearing
- Laminate — budget-friendly with improved quality in recent years
- Solid wood — warm and beautiful, but requires more maintenance
Plan Your Appliances
Integrated appliances give a seamless look that most people prefer in a fitted kitchen. Plan your appliance sizes early — standard widths are 60cm and 90cm for ovens and hobs, and 45cm or 60cm for dishwashers.
Don't Forget Lighting
A well-lit kitchen is a pleasure to work in. Combine task lighting (under-cabinet LEDs) with ambient lighting (pendants, ceiling spots) and consider a statement pendant over an island or dining area.
